“To unpathed waters, undreamed shores. - William Shakespeare”. This quote relates to my placement because I was led into an amazing experience at Kennedy Middle, that I had never dreamed possible. In my Career Field Experience class, I was required to observe and take part in teaching lessons to Mrs. McGuire’s 8th Grade Pre-Algebra Class. In my opinion Career Field Experience is a unique class because it gave me an amazing opportunity to begin my experience and career pathway with becoming a teacher. For thirteen weeks, I have gained a handful of knowledge, built amazing connections with staff and students, learned tips and ways to help me as a teacher, planned a field trip for her students and had an amazing overall experience. While reflecting on my overall learning experience in this class, I will outline the three employability skills of Dependability, Motivation, Leadership and how I have grown as a professional.
Dependability, is a skill I would use to describe me and my experience at Kennedy Middle school. Working at a Middle School, with an 8th grade class means, you must be dependable. When a student wants help on an assignment or has a question and is depending on you to know the answer. You need to show you are a dependable figure to ask. When I was planning the “Giving Back to the Community” field trip, there were many questions about when and where we would be going and what would we be doing. I was depended on to know the answers and allow students to ask questions. As a teacher being dependable means sticking to your word, and having students rely that you will fall through with what you tell them. I told the students about the field trip and got the field trip approved. I was dependable and stuck to my word. Being motivated, is absolutely a must skill for any teacher to offer. Being motivated and showing your students you are ready and willing to get tasks done makes them want to be motivated also. My experience at Kennedy, I needed to be motivated and show the students being motivated is an amazing skill to have. Showing motivation allows you to be on top of your tasks and is a skill you will need throughout your entire academic and career path. As a student teacher, I had to be on top of all my work and projects I was given. A teacher who shows leadership, is a teacher that can change lives. Leadership, a skill you should have at any job you work, or would like to work at. Showing leadership is proving you can lead your own life and your work life but also lead the minds and hearts of others. However, you must stand up for yourself and know your wrongs and rights. My experience at Kennedy Middle School I had to show the students and staff leadership, that I knew how to hold my life together and have a work life to lead. Leading students to the right directions and helping them when they are drifting off is a skill I showed most often. I am so pleased with my final evaluation, I have put in so much time and effort into my Career Field Experience. I completed every task to the best of my abilities. Such as grading papers, taking attendance, teaching lessons, interacting with students, and planning a field trip. I had some slip ups here and there and made some mistakes. A majority of my time at my experience was wonderful. I will admit one of my weaknesses adapting to new places quickly. It took me a while to finally get adjusted and settled in with working at Kennedy middle school. However, I made every day a good day and made every day count. I can work on this weakness by learning new ways to adjust and go out of my comfort zone to push me to adapt more easily. I am willing to say one of my strengths is being able to be positive every day going to my field experience and having a smile on my face whether my day is good or bad. Going into Career Field Experience, I had no idea what to expect. Teaching at Kennedy Middle School has absolutely changed me as a person. How? I have built so many connections and relationship with students and staff, gained so much knowledge and made some amazing memories. I will never forget when I first met Mrs. McGuire’s 4th and 5th hour classes I introduced myself and told them about the classes I was taking and about some things about my life and about myself. After I told the class about myself, a student walked up to me and gave me a picture she drew. I still have the picture and I keep it in the front of my binder to look at every day. I would recommend this experience to a friend, every person deserves to have a chance at this experience. My next steps would be to continue this class and getting more experience for my future employment and after I graduate I will be majoring Secondary Education with a Major in English and a Minor in either Social Studies or Mathematics in college.
